The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donates reading glasses to Uman

Sometimes things just seem to fall into place. This is certainly not coincidence; it’s by divine design by a merciful Father in Heaven. Such was the case with the need for reading glasses on the remote island of Uman, an island that is part of the Federated State of Micronesia called Chuuk.

The sisters of the Uman Relief Society asked the district Relief Society presidency, Sister Merien Sisra and Sister Phyllis Rosen, if there was any way to get reading glasses for the people of their branch. The district Relief Society presidency took the question seriously and contacted Elder and Sister Jenkins, humanitarian senior couple serving in Guam. They in turn asked Bill Davis (manager of humanitarian projects for Micronesia and Guam) what the possibilities were of obtaining reading glasses.  He said it was entirely doable and authorized Elder David and Sister Ilene Jenkins (Humanitarian Senior missionaries) to purchase the glasses immediately and have them shipped to Chuuk.

Within a couple weeks, 10 cases of reading glasses of various strengths arrived in Chuuk! Each case contained 72 glasses—720 glasses to share with the members and communities of Chuuk! Elder and Sister Rosen, a senior couple living on Chuuk, received the shipment and set to work figuring out how to disperse the glasses.

Sister Rosen also teaches the Mwan Branch seminary. Since one of the seminary lessons from the teachings of Paul was on ministering, Sister Rosen determined this was a great opportunity to engage the seminary students in ministering through this humanitarian project. There were enough glasses to distribute to all 8 branches in the Chuuk district, plus share with Chuuk High School, Akoyikoyi School, and the Chuuk Women’s Council (CWC). Elder Rosen provided a spreadsheet with instructions of how many glasses were needed for each entity, and the seminary students quickly sorted and filled the boxes with the needed number. This was a wonderful day of service that was not only helpful, it was fun!

The boxes were handed off to the branch presidents to share with their members. During the same week, Elder Halvorsen, Area Seventy for Micronesia/Guam, came to Chuuk and was here in time to accompany Elder and Sister Rosen as they delivered the reading glasses to the schools and the CWC. Turns out that the divine design included the timing of the delivery. The schools were just beginning their scholastic year and needed glasses for both teachers and students. The CWC was having a meeting the very next day with the presidents of various women’s groups they partner with for humanitarian needs; they would be able to tell these presidents about the glasses and work with them to distribute to those in need.

It's obvious that heaven is aware of all people, including those on remote isles of the sea. What a wonderful chance to bless lives through humanitarian donations.

D&C 6: 33-34 Fear not to do good, my sons, for whatsoever ye sow, that shall ye also reap; therefore, if ye sow good, ye shall also reap good for your reward.

Therefore, fear, not, little flock; do good;
