A generous donation made to the American Red Cross in Guam was given by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, for assistance granted to the survivors of super typhoon Mawar. A powerful typhoon which made landfall on Guam May 24, 2023, caused significant infrastructure damage to the island. Electrical power and the water system were nonfunctioning for weeks. Grocery stores were also closed for days.
Post storm weather was extremely hot and humid. The combination of these factors caused significant concern for medical and governmental leaders. As is the case in most domestic natural disasters, The American Red Cross was leading the way to bring relief to those affected by the storm. They had established 26 shelters before, during and after the storm, feeding and helping 889 displaced citizens.
Because of their many years of experience and established trained volunteer network, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is pleased to partner with The American Red Cross in times of disaster. The process the American Red Cross uses to distribute aid with volunteer workers, follows the same example of the Humanitarian Department of the Church. By using this approach more of the donation gets to those in need.
