Romanum Elementary School lies on the shoreline of the picturesque island of Romanum, an island on the western side of Chuuk lagoon in the Chuuk Island Group.
The school has a decades-long tradition of providing quality educational opportunities for the children of Chuuk, and still strives to do so (https://wheresfran.org/2014/06/why-wont-they-go-to-school/). As with many schools throughout Micronesia, obtaining sufficient funding and resources is an ongoing challenge.
To help the school better meet the needs of its students, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently helped with renovations to an outbuilding at the school so that the building can be used as a food service area during lunchtime. The Church donated the materials for the project and volunteer labor was provided by local church and community members to complete the project.
A 1500 gallon water retention tank has also been installed beside the food service structure to collect and store rain water for use by the school.
The Church of Jesus Christ continues in its efforts to follow the counsel of the Savior to “love thy neighbor as thyself” by helping provide self-reliance resources for islanders throughout Micronesia.
