There is a new face in the Office of Welfare and Self-Reliance at the Church’s Service Center in Guam. Brett Child arrived in September to begin his tenure as Welfare and Self-Reliance Manager. He replaces Bill Davis who served in the position for 25 years.

Brother Child will manage and direct the Church’s extensive humanitarian efforts in Guam/Micronesia.

He comes to the island with his best asset, his wife Rachelle Child. They have 4 married children, are the grandparents of 2 grandsons, and are looking forward to the birth of a new granddaughter in February.

Brett has dedicated his professional life to serving others. Specifically, he helps people realize their dreams by obtaining funding for individuals starting small businesses.

Brett’s talents and experience will be valuable as he helps people, schools, and organizations throughout Micronesia secure the funding and resources necessary to provide needed services throughout the area. The Church emphasizes the values of self-reliance and independence in its humanitarian efforts.

Rachelle Child as “an overachiever,” as well as the best travel planner on the planet, according to Brett. “She loves unconditionally and is the most unselfish person I know,” says Brett. “She is my rock.”

Rachelle has been teaching English to refugee families in the Salt Lake City area for over ten years and is also an expert genealogist who has been published in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register. She will lend her talents to serve in Guam and is already involved in teaching English.

Both Brett and Rachelle are already serving as ordinance workers in the Yigo Temple. As a team, they bring to Guam strong testimonies of the Restored Gospel and positive energy in doing the Lord’s work. Their presence will be a blessing to people in and out of the Church with whom they work and serve.

Asked to describe the purpose of the Church’s humanitarian efforts in the area, Brother Child expressed the following:

“The Church’s Humanitarian and self-reliance efforts follow the Savior’s example.   We are charged with caring for those in need around the globe by adhering to Matthew 22:39 which states to ‘love they neighbor as thyself.’   I have the best job in the entire world and am excited to bring my background and experience to work with the great people of Micronesia as we carry out God’s work of salvation to care for our neighbors.”
