All over the world, Christmas traditions look different. Families, communities, and cultures have their own unique ways to commemorate the Savior’s birth. For members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the month of December brings an increased emphasis on opportunities to “Light the World” with Christ-like acts of love and service, as well as experiences to invite the light of Christ.
One such event was held in Tokyo on December 2nd. A variety of choirs, ensembles, and instrumental performers from the combined Tokyo and Tokyo South Stakes, along with the Tokyo South Mission, presented a spirit-filled Christmas concert.
Tara Erwin, a member of the Yokota Military Ward shared her thoughts, “The Christmas concert was so amazing! Multiple choirs from both stakes sang – a mix of Japanese and English performers, and it was wonderful. I especially loved the congregational hymns, where both the Japanese and English languages were sung together. Such an amazing experience to intertwine the two and have such a strong spirit come through the music. Beautiful evening to start the Christmas season!”

Along with the beauty of Christmas music, the variety of performers and the smooth transitions throughout the program made for an especially enjoyable event. A short Christmas video, along with scripture readings, enhanced the presentation. A bell choir, featuring children from the Tokyo 2nd Ward Primary, trumpeters, violinists, pianists, organists, and vocalists were highlights of the occasion. The culminating event of the evening was when the whole audience stood and sang Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus.”
There are many opportunities to “Light the World” during this Christmas season. Some may perform and share their talents; others may do small acts of kindness. Throughout December, look for ways to bring joy to someone new each day. Here are a few easy ideas:
- Smile at someone.
- Hold the door open for a stranger.
- Visit an elderly neighbor.
- Go caroling with a group.
- Invite a friend to a Christmas event.
By following Jesus, the true Light of the World, you can bring light to the lives of friends, family members, coworkers, and even strangers. #LightTheWorld
