The celebrations featured a rich tapestry of activities, including a presentation of historic photographs and documents detailing the history of the Church on the island. These materials were generously shared by Church members, past and present missionaries, the Church Welfare and Self-Reliance Department, and BYU–Hawaii. A heartfelt video slideshow, prepared by Serlyn Mongkeya, showcased these historic moments, bringing back memories and honoring those who have shaped the Church’s journey in Kosrae.
Attendees enjoyed traditional island food and barbecued chicken, creating a warm and festive atmosphere. In both branches, speakers highlighted the legacy of faith and service that began in March 1985, when the first missionaries, Elder Diapulos and Elder Ramon, were sent to Kosrae by then-Mission President Joseph Keeler. Despite a chilly reception upon arrival, their perseverance planted seeds that have flourished over four decades.
President Molton Mongkeya, Lelu Branch President, reflected on the missionaries’ enduring impact:
"I have seen members of the Church become more courageous and confident because of the missionaries and the wonderful message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ," he said during his address.
Other speakers included President Carson Mongkeya, First Counselor in the Lelu Branch; President Stillwaugh, Second Counselor in the Micronesia Guam Mission; and President Benkin Daniel, First Counselor in the Utwe Branch. Each shared personal insights and stories highlighting the growth of the Church and the spiritual transformation of its members over the years.
The celebrations also acknowledged the Church’s extensive humanitarian contributions to Kosrae. These include:
- Over 100 greenhouses built in partnership with the Lelu Farmer’s Association since 2018.
- Donation of an excavator to support local farming initiatives.
- More than 40 community service projects, many of them life-changing for local residents.
- 15 health-related projects with the Kosrae State Hospital and Department of Health, including hospital beds and the donation of over 600 wheelchairs.
- 7 education projects, including classroom support and resources.
- Donation of computers to the Kosrae radio station to improve communication and outreach.
The event served not only as a celebration of the past, but as a testament to the continuing influence of missionary work and humanitarian service on the island. Thanks were extended to all who contributed to the history, preparation, and success of the anniversary celebration.
As Kosrae moves forward, the legacy of those first missionaries—and all who have served since—continues to inspire faith, service, and resilience in the hearts of the island’s people.
