Imagine living on a tropical island and not being able to go to the beach or swim in the lagoon. For many people living in the Mariana Islands, this has been a fact of life.
The Northern Mariana Islands Center for Living Independently, or CLI-CNMI, wanted to change that.
Located on Saipan, it serves the needs of individuals with disabilities through information and referrals, advocacy, peer counseling, and independent living skills training and transition.

“Clients of the center who need a wheelchair to get around will now have the opportunity to go to the beach and even get in the water,” said Susan Satur, Director for CLI-CNMI, “thanks to donations from our friends at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints”.

These donations include 2 wheelchairs and 2 beach wheelchair conversion kits, a 20-foot converted shipping container which is wheelchair accessible, to store the wheelchairs and other items, and a washing machine.

The Church also helped with roof repairs for an outdoor kitchen and container painting.
Brett Child, Welfare and Self Reliance manager for the Church, said “It has been a joy to work with Susan and the Center for Living Independently. The Church loves working with strong organizations making a difference in their community – fostering inclusion, dignity and independence for all.”
