Asia North Area Presidency Reorganizes

Beginning 1 August 2024, changes were made to the Asia North Area Presidency. Elder John A. McCune will serve as the Asia North Area President, with Elder J. Kimo Esplin serving as the First Counselor. Elder Christopher Hyunsu Kim will join the Asia North Presidency as the Second Counselor.  

Elder Kim was sustained as a General Authority Seventy of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 6, 2024. Members in the Asia north Area welcome Elder Kim to his new assignment and look forward to his leadership and service. To learn more about Elder Kim read this newsroom article.   

Elder Takashi Wada, former Area President, leaves the Asia North Area and will begin his new assignment as the First Counselor of The North America West Area Presidency. We express our love and gratitude for his service in Asia North Area.

Church Service

Elder John A. McCune was sustained as a General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 6, 2019. At the time of his call, he had been serving as an Area Seventy and a member of the Fifth Quorum of the Seventy in the Utah South Area. He was serving as the 1st counselor in the Asia North Area Presidency.

Elder McCune has served in a number of Church callings, including full-time missionary in the Japan Fukuoka Mission, Elder’s Quorum President, counselor in a ward Young Men Presidency, Counselor in a Branch Presidency, Counselor in a Bishopric, Bishop, Stake President, and President of the Utah Provo Mission.

Professional Life

Elder McCune received a Bachelor of Science degree in finance from Brigham Young University. In 1992 he received a Master of Business Administration in Finance from the University of California Los Angeles. He worked as a Senior Vice President and managing director for Capital Investment Advisors from 1997 to 2012, at which time he was called to serve as a Mission President.

Personal Life

John Allen McCune was born in Santa Cruz, California, on June 20, 1963. He married Debbra Ellen Kingsbury in 1984. They are the parents of four children.

Church Service

Elder J. Kimo Esplin was sustained as a General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the April 2023 general conference. At the time of his call, he had been serving as a member of the Twelfth Quorum of the Seventy in the Utah Area.

Elder Esplin has served in several Church callings, including full-time missionary in the Japan Kobe Mission, High Councilor, Bishop, Stake President, President of the Japan Tokyo North Mission, President of the Japan Tokyo South Mission, and Area Seventy.

Professional Life

Elder Esplin received a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Brigham Young University in 1987 and a Master of Business Administration degree from Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management in 1990. He has worked as the Vice President of the investment banking division for Bankers Trust Company, as the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for the Huntsman Corporation, and as a board member for Savage Companies.

Personal Life

Jon Ross Kimo Esplin was born in Kahuku, Hawaii, on August 18, 1962. He married Kaye Davis in 1985. They Christopher Hyunsu Kimare the parents of eight children.

Church Service

Elder Christopher H. Kim was sustained as a General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 6, 2024. At the time of his call, he had been serving as an Area Seventy and a member of the Fourth Quorum of the Seventy in the Asia North Area.  On Aug. 1, Elder Kim will begin serving as second counselor in the Asia North Area presidency.  Elder Kim had served since 2019 as an Area Seventy. His Church service has also included time as a Stake President, Stake Presidency Counselor, Stake Mission President and High Councilor.

Professional Life

Elder Kim graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology in 1995 and a Master of Business Administration in 1997. After school, he worked in the United States, Thailand and South Korea. Since 2005 he has been employed by Unicity International, a Utah-based nutritional products and cosmetics supplier, most recently as President of global markets, based in Seoul, South Korea.

Personal Life

Christopher Hyunsu Kim was born November 18, 1965, in Daegu, South Korea, the oldest of four children — four sons — of Chinho Kim and Kuncha Han Kim.  He married Sister Seongmi (Sue) Kim Dec. 7, 1991, in the Los Angeles California Temple. They have one son and three daughters.
